S.Korea holds 1st session of preparatory committee for reunification with DPRK

SOUTH Korea on Thursday held an inaugural session of the presidential committee to systematically prepare for reunification with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

President Park Geun-hye chaired the session of the high-profile committee composed of 50 members, including 30 private experts, two lawmakers, 11 government officials and six heads of the state- run think tanks.

Those members were nominated last month, including two deputy chairmen Chung Chong-wook, former South Korean ambassador to China, and Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae.

Park instructed the committee at the session to draw up a blue print for reunification with the DPRK, mentioning the so-called Dresden Initiative.

Park traveled to the former East German city of Dresden in March, where she made the three-point initiative to the DPRK, including infrastructure development in the DPRK, broader inter- Korean exchange in non-political areas and humanitarian aid.

Park raised the issue of reunification with the DPRK in her New Year's speech in January, calling it a "bonanza" for the two Koreas and a blessing for the region and the world. She promised in January to form such a committee to prepare for peaceful reunification.
