San Diego mayor faces recall bid over sex scandal

A petition to oust scandal-plagued San Diego mayor Bob Filner was announced yesterday after his refusal to resign following a sexual harassment scandal.

Filner, a Democrat who was elected mayor of the southern Californian city last November, last month admitted he had engaged in "wrong and inexcusable behavior" and enrolled in two weeks of therapy, due to conclude on August 5.

However the 70-year-old's failure to step down has angered colleagues and party officials, including California's respected Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein.

Yesterday two private individuals announced a joint recall petition to seek Filner's removal from office as a ninth woman emerged to make fresh allegations of harassment.

The organizers of the petition must gather 102,000 signatures by September 26 to force a recall election.

The latest allegations against Filner were made yesterday by a Marilyn Monroe impersonator who claimed the politician groped her during a fundraiser.

"He hugged me a little too closely and then put his arm around me like this," Gilbert told local television.

"And then he proceeded to slide his arm down and give a grab to my derriere."
