Saudi interior minister named new crown prince: royal court
SAUDI Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has been appointed as new crown prince by Saudi Arabian King Abdullah, the royal court said in a statement broadcast by state television early today.
The appointment was made after the king met the royal court's Allegiance Council, which is in charge of succession issues in the world's top oil supplier, the statement said.
Nayef has served as Saudi Arabia's second deputy premier and interior minister since 1975.
Former Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud died of an illness in New York last Saturday and was buried Tuesday in Riyadh.
