A South Korean fishing boat sank off waters in Chungcheongnam-do of South Korea yesterday morning, leaving eight people missing, including five Chinese sailors, sources from the Chinese Embassy in Seoul confirmed.
The 69-ton boat crashed into a 2,116-ton freighter and sank. Nine sailors were aboard the boat when the collision happened.
Coast guard official Go Jong-kug said a search was under way for the eight missing sailors. The vessel's other crew member was rescued by another fishing boat.
The rescued sailor is a Korean national. He said that the sailors were sleeping when the boat was hit.
No one on the freighter was injured and the vessel did not suffer any damage.
The Chinese Embassy contacted the local coast guard and requested they try every means to rescue the missing sailors.
