Security tightened in Ukraine after Minsk metro blast

UKRAINE took additional security measures after an explosion hit a metro station in Minsk, local media reported today.

"We have strengthened anti-terrorism measures at the transport facilities and in crowded places," the Interfax-Ukraine news agency quoted the Security Service of Ukraine spokesperson as saying.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has expressed his heartfelt condolences for the victims in Minsk explosion.

"We share the pain of those who lost loved ones with the friendly Belarusian people. On behalf of the Ukrainian people and me personally, I express my sincere words of sympathy and support to victim's families. And I wish a speedy recovery to all being injured," Yanukovych said in a message to his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko.

The death toll in Minsk metro blast increased to 12, as one of the victims died at night, Center for Information and Public Relations of Belarus KGB said in a statement this morning.

According to KGB, 49 people injured applied to the health facility for medical care, 22 of them in serious condition, and 30 with injuries of moderate severity.
