Series of strong quakes rock central New Zealand

Three very strong earthquakes shook central New Zealand with 10 minutes of each other today.
  
The first quake struck at 2:31pm local time and was centered 10 km southeast of Seddon, in the far north of the South

Island, at a depth of 8 km, according to the government's GeoNet monitoring service.

Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake was measured 6.8 on the Richter scale.

It was a magnitude 6.2 quake and rated in intensity as "severe".

A magnitude 5.6 "severe" quake struck at 2:37 p.m. and was centered 5 km southeast of Seddon at a depth of 5 km.

A "strong" 4.2-magnitude quake struck at 2:41 p.m., centered 35 km northeast of Seddon at a depth of 5 km.
  
All the quakes were felt in the capital Wellington.
