Shops ready for 3D TV

DSG International, Europe's No. 2 electrical retailer, said it expected the summer launch of 3D TVs to be a boost for sales as it detailed plans to accelerate the roll-out of new format stores.

CEO John Browett said during a visit on Friday to the firm's Megastore in Thurrock, the UK's largest electricals store, that he expected "early adopters" to drive the 3D TV market in 2010 before it hits the mass market in 2011.

"The second year of these technologies is when it actually becomes more mainstream," he said.

"The customer reaction when you show just them in store is like 'wow this is amazing' ... It will be good this year."

DSG, which runs the Currys and PC World chains in Britain, UniEuro in Italy and Elkjop in Nordic countries, is currently taking pre-orders for 3D TVs.

Browett said content will be driven by gaming, animation, sports, big blockbuster films and high-quality cinematography.

"Where you're panning through the Serengeti, that is quite amazing to see in 3D," he said. Recent films such as "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland" were shot in 3D.
