Singapore pulls plug on 鈥榬acist鈥 website
Singapore yesterday ordered a local man and an Australian woman facing jail time for articles seen as hostile to foreigners to shut their website down, saying it threatens 鈥減ublic order and national harmony.鈥
The Media Development Authority said it has ordered Yang Kaiheng, 26, and Japanese-Australian Ai Takagi, 22, to take down the The Real Singapore website as well as its associated online and social media accounts.
The media regulator said in a statement that it had suspended the pair鈥檚 鈥渟tatutory class license鈥 to operate the website, which in general is automatically granted without a need for application to people who operate websites inside and from Singapore.
The MDA said Yang and Takagi published material that is 鈥渙bjectionable on the grounds of public interest, public order and national harmony.鈥
The website went offline yesterday evening, while its widely followed Facebook and Twitter accounts were also shut down.
鈥淭he Real Singapore has been ordered to disable access to all our online services by the Media Development Authority of Singapore,鈥 read a message on the website.
The MDA said the website 鈥渉as deliberately fabricated articles and falsely attributed them to innocent parties.鈥
Yang and Takagi, described by local media as a couple based in Australia, were charged on April 14 with seven counts of sedition over articles on the website and a Facebook page between October 2013 and February this year.
