Slave labor victims set for payout, apology
JAPAN’S Mitsubishi Materials has agreed to pay compensation and make a formal apology to the Chinese people it used as forced labor during World War II, the Kyodo News reported yesterday.
The agency cited a Japanese government report as saying that 3,765 Chinese were forced to work at 12 mines in Japan, of whom 720 died while in thrall.
Mitsubishi is planning to pay 2 million yen (US$16,000) to each survivor or their families, Kyodo said.
The deal was struck after repeated efforts by survivors to secure compensation were rejected by Japanese courts.
The company will also erect a memorial to those who died, the agency said.
About 40,000 Chinese were forcibly taken to Japan during World War II, of whom about 7,000 died.
The Japanese government has not commented on the move by Mitsubishi, which came after the firm on Sunday issued a similar apology to the American prisoners of war it used as forced labor.
