Smoke scare on NK aircraft
A FLIGHT from Pyongyang to Beijing was forced to land in the northeast China city of Shenyang yesterday because of smoke in the aircraft, according to a passenger.
Smoke appeared in the cabin about 30 minutes after takeoff from Pyongyang Sunan International Airport, the passenger said.
Flight attendants told passengers not to panic and that the plane would temporarily land at Shenyang Taoxian International Airport.
By that time, oxygen masks had dropped down automatically and several passengers were having difficulty breathing because of a shortage of oxygen in the cabin, the passenger said. The plane landed after another 10 minutes in the air.
Fire trucks were on hand to deal with any fire. There was smoke when ground staff examined the plane, the passenger said, but there were no flames to be seen. There were no reports of casualties.
The flight was operated by Air Koryo, the national flag carrier of North Korea.
A staff member at the Pyongyang airport said the plane made the unscheduled landing because of a “malfunction,” but more investigation was needed before determining the cause of the incident.
