Space crew's return to Earth delayed by problem

A problem with a docking port on the International Space Station delayed the departure of three crew members due to return to Earth today by a day, officials at Mission Control said.

Russians Alexander Skvortsov and Mikhail Korniyenko and NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson climbed into a Soyuz capsule for the descent, but clamps on the docking port failed to open, a spokeswoman at Russian mission control said. "There will be no undocking today," the spokeswoman said.

The departure and descent was postponed until Saturday, Russaia's Roscosmos space agency chief Anatoly Perminov said.

"I see no technical problem on the station or anywhere that would threaten the crew," he said.

Another Roscosmos official, Alexei Krasnov, said the landing should take place on Saturday at about 9:20am (0520GMT).

Skvortov, Korniyenko and Caldwell Dyson boarded the space station on April 4 after a flight up together in the Soyuz TMA-18, which will also be used for their return to Earth.

The station is also currently occupied by Russian Fyodor Yurchikhin and NASA astronauts Doug Wheelock and Shannon Walker.
