Spain to send 500 more troops to Afghanistan-paper

SPAIN plans to send 500 more soldiers to Afghanistan in response to US President Barack Obama's new strategy in the region, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported today.
Defence Minister Carme Chacon is expected to announce the reinforcement in parliament later on Thursday and specify whether the number includes 220 soldiers who were deployed in November.
Spain currently has 1,000 troops in Afghanistan.
The troops, to be concentrated in Baghdis province, will support training teams for the new Afghan army to fight the Taliban, the report said.
