Spanish court convicts suspected Georgian gangster

A SPANISH court has convicted a Georgian crime gang leader of money laundering and sentenced him to seven and a half years in jail.

Zahar Knyazevich Kalashov was extradited to Spain from the United Arab Emirates in 2006. The 57-year-old crime boss was also fined 20 million euro (US$25 million).

Two other Georgians, two Russians and a Ukrainian were convicted of similar charges and given lesser sentences in a separate trial last year, after police raids in 2005 and 2006.

The court says the gang laundered money from criminal activities in the former Soviet Union by investing in real estate, restaurants, bars, luxury cars and other valuable assets in Spain.

The court said Tuesday the six should be deported once they serve three-quarters of their sentences.
