Spanish princess' lawyers present appeal against tax fraud charges

THE lawyers representing Infanta Cristiana, the youngest sister of King Felipe VI of Spain on Friday lodged an appeal against the decision taken by Judge Jose Castro on December 22 that she should stand trial on charges of embezzlement and tax evasion in court alongside her husband Inaki Urdangarin.

The appeal was lodged in the court in the city of Palma on the island of Mallorca, where the trial is due to be held sometime later this year, by the Princess' lawyer Jaume Riutord.

"We have presented the appeal against the decision she has to stand trial and I am not going to make any comment in relation to its content," was all Riutord would saw on leaving the courthouse.

In deciding she had to stand trial, Judge Castro had rejected the claims of Cristina's defense and also of Spain's Anti-Corruption Prosecutor, who insisted she was not involved in Urdangarin's business dealings and she lacked the financial knowledge to have actively participated in the fraud case known as the 'Noos Case'   Noos was a supposedly non-profit making organization, which Urdangarin and his partner, Diego Torres used to secure contracts from the regional governments of Valencia and the Balearic Islands, with Urdgangarin using his influence as a member of the royal household to obtain the contracts.

He and Torres are thought to have embezzled as much as 6 million euros (around 7.2 million U.S. dollars), much of which was siphoned off through a front company called 'Aizoon', according to media reports.
