Spanish train kills 12 trying to cross track

AT least 12 people were killed when a train slammed into them as they tried to cross a railway track near Barcelona, Spanish media reported today.

Around 17 people were injured in the accident at around 11.30 pm (2130 GMT) yesterday as the group were on their way to celebrate the annual Saint John's Day festival, local radio reported.

They had crossed the railway track instead of using an underpass on the line between Barcelona and Alicante, it said.

Emergency services found dismembered bodies scattered at the scene of the accident at Castelldefels Playa station, El Pais newspaper reported.

The group had apparently got off a train and then crossed the track to head for the beach, local radio quoted emergency services as saying.

Hundreds of mostly young people were celebrating the festival on the beach at the northeastern Spanish town.
