Sri Lanka battles dengue

THE Sri Lankan government is spraying mosquito-breeding grounds, threatening to jail those who don't clean up puddles on their property and importing a special bacteria from Cuba in an effort to combat a huge spike in deadly dengue infections.

The virus has killed at least 163 people and infected 14,750 across the country so far this year, more than double the cases from last year, said health ministry official Dharma Wanninayake yesterday.

Wanninayake blamed the increase on people's failure to clean up properly.
