Stage collapse kills 1, hurts 60 in western Canada
ONE person was killed and about 60 were hurt at a country music festival near the western Canadian city of Edmonton yesterday when the main stage collapsed during a heavy storm, media reported.
Billy Currington was wrapping up his set at the Big Valley Jamboree, a four-day event near Camrose, about one hour's drive southeast of Edmonton, when the accident happened, the Canadian Press said.
Photographs on the Edmonton Journal website showed winds whipping around people and the stage as it collapsed, trapping some concertgoers.
Hollywood actor Kevin Costner and his band Modern West were on the roster to perform after Currington. Others on the bill over the four days ending today included the Kentucky Headhunters, Tim McGraw, Glen Campbell, Willie Mack and WYATT.
Severe weather hit nearby areas, with the organizers of the Heritage Festival evacuating people from an Edmonton park.
Residents in the Stony Plain area reported "hurricane-like" conditions yesterday afternoon, the Journal said.
"Trees were bent sideways and hail was the size of marbles," Andrew Rain, who works at a golf club, told the newspaper.
