Stampede kills 18 in India
INDIAN police say at least 18 people have been killed in a stampede during a religious festival in the eastern state of Bihar.
Police Superintendent Jayant Kant said the stampede occurred late last night as crowds of Hindu devotees were offering prayers on the banks of the Ganges River in Patna, the state capital. He said the stampede began when a power outage sparked panic as crowds filled a makeshift walkway leading into the Ganges.
Hundreds of worshippers gathered along the bank of the river to offer prayers to the sun god during yesterday's Chhath festival.
Deadly stampedes are fairly common during India's crowded religious festivals, which regularly include tens of thousands of worshippers.
