Storm Claims 25 Lives In The Philippines

HEAVY rains and floods triggered by tropical storm Nockten battered the northeastern Philippines for a third day yesterday, swamping the homes of about half a million people and raising the death toll to at least 25 with 31 missing.

Waist-deep water flooded the houses of nearly half of the population of eastern Albay province and sent residents to seek shelter in churches and village halls, said Governor Joey Salceda.

Regional civil defense chief Rafaelito Alejandro said flooding in Albay was subsiding by noon yesterday after the storm made landfall in Aurora, about 370 kilometers to the north. The storm brought winds of up to 95 kilometers per hour, gusting up to 120kph.

Alejandro said at least 20 people died in the Bicol region, which includes Albay. Eight of those were buried in landslides.

Most of the missing are poor fishermen who ventured out to sea despite the storm. A boat with 32 men on board capsized off central Masbate province. Ten men were rescued.
