Strong earthquake strikes near Papua New Guinea

A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea, but are no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warnings have been issued.

The US Geological Survey says the 6.3 magnitude quake struck today 19 miles (31 kilometers) east of Wewak, at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers).

No tsunami warning has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The archipelago nation is part of the Pacific Ocean's "ring of fire" where earthquakes of this magnitude are fairly common and rarely cause serious damage.
