Support for Japan's premier at a new low
PUBLIC support for Japan's premier has dropped to a new low, with almost half of respondents in a survey demanding he resign if relocation of the United States military base on Okinawa isn't settled by the end of May.
The poll by the Yomiuri newspaper found the approval rate for Yukio Hatoyama's Cabinet plummeted to 33 percent in April, from 41 percent in March. The drop comes just seven months after Hatoyama took office.
He has repeatedly pledged to resolve the relocation of the military base by the end of May, and 49 percent of respondents said he should resign if it isn't resolved by then.
Okinawa hosts more than half the 47,000 US troops in Japan under a security pact. To ease Okinawa's burden, Japan and the US agreed in 2006 to move the airfield. But Hatoyama's government is divided over calls that a replacement should be located off Okinawa or outside Japan altogether.
