Support for tougher airport security

MANY Americans took to the skies yesterday for the start of Thanksgiving amid protests by some travelers about tough new security procedures - °?although most support the new?measures.

The new screening methods that have drawn complaints involve revealing full-body imaging scanners and physical patdowns for travelers who opt out of the scans or raise security concerns.

Some people upset with the screening procedures have waged an Internet campaign urging travelers to refuse to use the scanners yesterday, which means they would have to be patted down by an official. Early yesterday, there were no reports of wide-scale protests or disruptions at major airports.

The Transportation Security Administration estimates that fewer than 2 percent of the 2 million passengers screened daily, or 40,000, are given the controversial patdowns.

TSA chief John Pistole told CNN yesterday that he believed the measures were necessary, but officials were trying to work out if there were less invasive ways of ensuring airline security.

Most Americans support the new full-body scanning machines at airports.
