Survivors and deaths reported in air crash
A SMALL plane carrying 32 people, including parents on their way to their children's graduation, crashed in a remote area of Papua New Guinea yesterday, according to an official and news reports.
Local villagers told the government-owned National Broadcasting Commission there were four survivors.
The Airlines PNG Dash 8 aircraft crashed while flying from Lae to Madang on the south Pacific island nation's north coast, according to Accident Investigation Commission spokesman Sid O'Toole.
The twin-propellor plane crashed 20 kilometers south of Madang, he said, adding: "All I can tell you is there have been reports of survivors and of fatalities."
Police and ambulances had reached the crash site and investigators would travel there today, he said.
News agency reports said most of the passengers were traveling to attend their children's university graduation ceremony in Madang this weekend.
Australian Broadcasting Corp television cited Madang residents as saying that a violent storm in the area at the time of the crash.
Donald Lambert, duty manager at the Madang Resort, said six of the plane's occupants - a passenger and five crew members - had reservations at his hotel.
