Suspects hunted for gang-rape of tourist

Indian police carried out raids across New Delhi yesterday as they hunted for a further five men wanted over the gang-rape of a Danish tourist which has put the country’s record on sexual violence back in the spotlight.

Police announced the arrest of two homeless men late on Wednesday who are suspected of taking part in the assault and robbery of the 51-year-old victim on Tuesday.

A third suspect, aged 23, was arrested yesterday, police said.

The duo arrested on Wednesday appeared in a city court yesterday and were remanded in custody for three days, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

They had covered their faces to hide their identity.

The tourist had lost her way as she returned to her hotel in the backpackers’ area and apparently asked men for directions.

Additional Commissioner of Delhi Police Alok Kumar said the accused assaulted the victim for almost three hours at knifepoint.

Violence against women in India has caused increasing alarm since the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old Indian student in New Delhi in 2012.

The Danish woman flew out of India on Wednesday.
