Swiss activists urge sex offenders list
Swiss campaigners yesterday demanded a nationwide register of sex offenders, amid outrage following the murder of a female therapist who accompanied a convicted rapist on day release.
A three-nation manhunt continued for suspected killer Fabrice Anthamatten, on the run since Thursday’s fatal outing, with forces in Switzerland and n France and Germany on alert and an Interpol arrest warrant issued.
Activist Anita Chaaban said Adeline Morel’s death was a wake-up call.
“We’ve crossed a line. This can’t go on,” she told the Sunday newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag.
Chaaban said she aimed to push for a referendum to create a central, life-long register of sex offenders, who would remain on the list even after having served their sentence.
In 2004 voters endorsed a law crafted by Chaaban to punish those violent sex offenders with life-long imprisonment.
Separately, lawmaker Natalie Rickli of the populist Swiss People’s Party said yesterday that she would table a bill banning day release for sex offenders.
Beat Villiger, deputy head of the Swiss cantonal justice and police association, told the SonntagsBlick newspaper the rules needed a shake-up, with only men being allowed to accompany sex offenders on day release.
