Switzerland confirms 2 citizens abducted in Pakistan
A SWISS couple were abducted in Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province and still nowhere to find, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said yesterday.
The Swiss embassy in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad has received notification from local authorities on the couple's abduction, the ministry said in a statement, adding that the Swiss government has set up a task force to secure the couple's release.
The task force "is pressing for everything necessary to be done to allow the hostages' liberation in good health," according to the statement.
Local media reported earlier yesterday that the Swiss couple, identified as Ocholivier David and Wipmerderielaay Omer, were taken on Friday by a group of gunmen from their vehicle while they were travelling in Loralai, a district located some 160 kilometers east of Quetta, capital city of Balochistan Province.
Pakistani officials said that they had launched an "intense" operation to locate the two Swiss.
Balochistan, an insurgency-hit region bordering both Afghanistan and Iran, has frequently seen kidnappings of foreign tourists by criminal groups. In most cases, kidnappers demand ransom for the release of their hostages.
