Sydney University staff strike over working conditions
STAFF and students at the University of Sydney formed picket lines at the entrance to the campus today, protesting management's plans to abolish workload limits and remove restrictions on working hours, local media reported.
Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) Sydney University branch president Grant Wheeler said some classes have been disrupted due to the strike, and there was not much activity on campus.
But University of Sydney spokesman Andrew Potter told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that the most classes and most of the business of the university would proceed as normal.
"We do expect that some academic staff will cancel classes, but members of the union are certainly in the minority of the staff, they don't represent the majority of the staff," he said.
The strike has gained supports from some federal members of parliament (MPs), according to the Australia Associated Press.
Greens senator Lee Rhiannon addressed the rally that the changes would have a negative impact on teaching and learning at the university.
"Unless you have staff with excellent conditions and pay to match, you can't have a world class university," she said.
Labor MP Doug Cameron used the rally to criticize the coalition' s plan to reform the industrial relations system.
"This is unacceptable in modern democracy and we support your struggle for collective bargaining," he said.
