Sydney mom drops baby and toddler from 2nd floor window

Officials say a mother trapped by fire in her Sydney apartment has safely dropped her 2-day-old baby and 2 year-old toddler from a second-floor window to rescuers below.

Police Senior Constable Jamie Wallace said Friday that the children were uninjured by the fire and their 6-meter (20-foot) fall on Thursday night in suburban Lakemba.

Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry says their 27-year-old mother was rescued from the window by firefighters with a ladder and was taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and cuts.

Details of the children's rescue before emergency services arrived were sketchy.

Dewberry says the baby boy was caught by people holding a bed sheet over scattered mattresses. Dewberry was unsure how the toddler was caught.
