Syria president issues amnesty for crimes during unrest

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad declared today an amnesty for all crimes committed during the unrest starting in mid March, official SANA news agency reported.

The amnesty involves those who have peacefully demonstrated, those who have carried and possessed unlicensed weapons and ammunition, in addition to those who would hand over their unlicensed weapons to the government before the end of this month, said SANA.

It also applies to army deserters who fled the military service, if they turn themselves in to authorities before January 31. It was not clear how many prisoners would be affected by today's presidential decree.

Since the outbreak of the unrest in Syria, Assad freed 3952 prisoners "whose hands were not smeared with Syrians' blood," according to SANA.

Releasing those who were arrested during the unrest has topped the protesters' demands and was part of a deal concluded lately between the Syrian government and the Arab League (AL) ministerial committee to bring the Syrian crisis to a close.

The AL-sponsored plan providing for ending all acts of violence, releasing all detainees, halting all armed aspects across the country and allowing in Arab observer to monitor the situation on the ground.
