TV: 15 missing after boat sinks in Indonesia

AN Indonesian television station says 15 passengers are missing after an overcrowded boat sank in eastern Indonesia.

TVOne says a boat carrying 59 passengers went down late yesterday off Halmahera island, 2,430 kilometers (1,510 miles) east of Jakarta.

Local officials were not immediately available for comment today.

Monday and Tuesday are national holidays.

Ferries are a main source of transportation in Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation with more than 17,000 islands and a population of 235 million. Sea accidents are common due to overcrowding and poor safety standards.
