Tainted liquor toll in India hits 122
People sickened after drinking a toxic home-brewed liquor continued to arrive at hospitals in western India, as the death toll from the tainted drink rose to 122, police said yesterday.
Another 224 are being treated in hospitals in Ahmadabad, according to an officer at the Police Control Room in the main city of Gujarat state, where the sale of all liquor is banned.
Ten people died in hospitals overnight on Friday, raising the death toll from 112.
Most of the victims, who drank the tainted brew last Sunday, were poor laborers, looking for cheap means of intoxication. Wealthier residents of Gujarat are able to turn to liquor smuggled in from other states.
Earlier this week the state government asked a retired judge to investigate the deaths and suspended six police officers for negligence of duty. Police have also arrested dozens of people.
