Teachers lost in quake rubble

FORTY teachers are among those believed still to be missing in the rubble following the earthquake that struck eastern Turkey more than a week ago, officials said.

The death toll yesterday stood at 601, including at least 64 teachers, nearly a third of whom were said to have been crushed to death at a multistory cafe in the worst-hit town of Ercis.

The teachers had gathered at the cafe following a training seminary at a government building across the street, according to Education Minister Omer Dincer.

He said many of the dead teachers were interns who had been in the job only four months, and that many were still missing. He added: "We do not know how many of our citizens are still under the rubble."

Ihsan Ozcukurlu, chairman of the National Education Foundation, said 40 teachers were believed to be missing.

Meanwhile, water and electricity have been restored to parts of the area hit by the 7.2-magnitude quake on October 23. Other countries have sent tents and blankets for the thousands left homeless as winter approaches.
