Tech glitches dog EU video conferencing
Video conferencing during the coronavirus pandemic is sorely testing the European Union鈥檚 decision-making process, EU officials said, with one calling it a catastrophe.
A virtual meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday was punctuated by technical problems, speakers who were unsure if they could be heard and a lack of translators.
鈥淭hese video conferences don鈥檛 work very well, there are tech problems and the 鈥楬ello, can you hear me?鈥 interruptions,鈥 said a senior diplomat. 鈥淪o people read their prepared notes mostly. There is little scope for actual negotiations.鈥
Strong coordination among the EU鈥檚 27 member states is vital, but lockdowns and travel bans have made it harder than usual for the EU, and many organizations are unable to bring representatives together in person for meetings.
鈥淚n the video conferences, it鈥檚 a catastrophe, the images are lost, the voices are lost,鈥 said the EU鈥檚 top diplomat, Josep Borrell, who has participated in virtual talks with Asian and European ministers.
He said he preferred telephone calls.
