Thai advance voting disrupted by protesters
Thailand's anti-government protesters today disrupted the advance voting for the February 2 election in the capital Bangkok and several southern provinces.
Because of protesters who have blocked polling stations since the wee hours of Sunday, only seven out of 50 polling stations in Bangkok remained open as of 11am local time, the Nation newspaper reported.
It is also reported that in 15 southern provinces, most people have been unable to cast a vote while voting in four other southern provinces, including Yala, Narathiwat, Pattani and Satu, have largely been left undisturbed.
Meanwhile, the advance voting in north, northeast and central Thailand have been going smoothly, Election Commission (EC) secretary-general Puchong Nutrawong was quoted as saying.
Those who have registered for advance voting but failed to do so today can cast their votes on February 2, director of Bangkok's election commission Veera Yeephare said.
The EC and caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra are expected to negotiate on the postponement of the February 2 election later on Tuesday.
