Thai army officers to meet Cambodians to stop clashes

Senior Thai army officers will meet with their Cambodian counterparts on Saturday's morning in a bit to end clashes along their common border, a senior Thai army officer said.

Army spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd confirmed that there was an exchange of fire between soldiers of the two countries at 6. 15 am to 6.40 am on Saturday, but he did not confirm the reported casualties.

Some Thai media reported that one Thai soldier was killed in the early morning's firing.

Thai Lieutenant General Thawatchai Samutsakorn of the 2nd army region, which is in charge of the common border with Cambodia, will be leading a meeting with his Cambodian counterparts Saturday' s morning in a bit to end the gun firing, Sansern told a local television.

The exchange of fire flared up on Friday's afternoon, but stopped after a few hours, with some casualties on both sides.

Both sides have been blaming the other of launching the fire first.

Sansern confirmed that Thai troops have been reinforced and on alert along the common border.

The border between Thailand and Cambodia has never been completely demarcated and the issue of Preah Vihear temple has been an age-old dispute. In 2008, the temple was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
