Thai police may lay charges over royal rumors
THAI police are considering criminal charges against four people for allegedly spreading rumors about the health of the country's monarch that sent the local stock market plunging, an official said yesterday.
The Stock Exchange of Thailand tumbled sharply on October 14-15 amid rumors that the health of 81-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej was declining, which raised fears of a power vacuum in the divided Asian nation.
The king was hospitalized on September 19 with fever, fatigue and lack of appetite. The palace later reported he was recovering but he was not seen in public for more than three weeks afterward.
