Thai ruling party says Yingluck will run in election

Thailand's ruling Puea Thai Party said on Monday that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will run in the general election after she dissolved parliament.

"She will definitely run as she has worked with the party all along," Party leader Jarupong Ruangsuwan was quoted as saying.

Thailand's anti-government protesters on Monday demanded interim Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to resign immediately and hand power to a "people's council."

Sathit Wongnongtoey, leader of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), said it was too late for Yingluck to dissolve the House of Representatives, which would not defuse the current political tension as Yingluck and her cabinet would still serve as the interim government.

He said the protesters demanded Yingluck to resign immediately so as to pave way for the establishment of a "people's council," which would take over and govern in the interim.

According to a six-point proposal made by the newly-founded PDRC, the "people's council" would be formed by representatives chosen by people from all walks of life to act as a legislative body. It will select "decent people" with no political party affiliations to form an interim government.

In their final effort to topple the government on Monday, the protesters have besieged the Government House, waiting for the main procession led by Suthep Thaugsuban, core PDRC leader and former deputy prime minister. Barricades have been erected outside the Government House and no confrontation has occurred between the police and protesters.
