Thailand rejects bail for plane crew over arms shipment

THAI police denied bail for five foreigners detained yesterday after the authorities confiscated a large amount of military armaments aboard their plane, according to the Thai News Agency today.

Initially, police charged the five men of violating aviation regulations and arms trafficking laws. Police said they would ask Criminal Court permission Monday for further detention and interrogation of the five men and that bail would be denied.

They are now detained at the Police Crime Suppression Division and will be sent to Bangkok Special Prison after permission is received from the Criminal Court.

Thai authorities yesterday detained five men and seized about35 tons of weapons in their aircraft at Bangkok's Don Mueang airport. One of the crew members holds a Belarus passport while the other four hold Kazakhstan passports.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said today the Thai government will report this to the United Nations, and the countries of the five detained foreigners will also be notified.

Meanwhile, Crime Suppression Police early today began interrogating the five men.
