'The Great Gatsby' tops US$100 million mark in N America

THE film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's ultramodernist novel about jazz-age America has crossed the US$100-million threshold after 14 days in North American theaters, distributor Warner Bros. announced yesterday.

The latest directorial project from Baz Luhrmann starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton has been the Australian's biggest earner in the United States and Canada so far.

Luhrmann's last most successful film -- "Moulin Rouge" -- earned US$57 million in ticket sales in 2001.

"Just as the book has been beloved by readers for generations, Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby' has already become a favorite of moviegoers," said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution.

The opulent extravaganza, a lavish 3D love story from Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, was also the eighth film starring DiCaprio to top the 100-million-dollar-mark in North America.

In the major foreign markets, meanwhile, the 105 million dollar-budget movie has already grossed US$64.4 million and is on pace for a worldwide total of US$165.1 million.
