Three dead after ship capsizes in C. Philippines

AT least three people died after a vessel capsized off central Philippine province of Southern Leyte on Saturday night, the Philippine navy said in a statement Sunday.

More than 110 people have been rescued, according to the naval public affairs office in the statement.

The vessel coming from Liloan in Southern Leyte and enroute to Lipata of Surigao City encountered "steering casualty." "It can't make a left or right turn, and may have crashed," said Jim Alagao, spokesman of the armed forces Central Command.

Passengers and crew of the ship abandoned the ship at 9:20pm. Responding ship Maharlika-4 arrived in Lipata Port at 11 pm, carrying 32 survivors. Meanwhile, foreign vessel MV Lara Venture rescued 18 people, and MT Martin rescued five others.

Earlier report from the country's National Disaster Reduction and Management Council said only 84 people were on board the vessel, among whom 29 were missing.

Search and rescue operations are continuing, the naval public affairs office said.
