Tokyo hit by magnitude 6 earthquake
A MAGNITUDE 6 earthquake shook buildings in the Japanese capital Tokyo early yesterday, slightly injuring 17 people, but officials stressed there was no risk of a tsunami.
Inhabitants were woken shortly after dawn by the quake, which jolted the city’s densely built apartments and office blocks.
Local media said 17 people were injured as they stumbled while trying to take cover. Among them was a 74-year-old woman who dislocated her shoulder.
Some objects fell from shelves and furniture wobbled.
The epicentre of the quake — which hit at 5:18am — was near Izu Oshima island southwest of central Tokyo, the Japanese meteorological agency said.
The United States Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 6, revised up from 5.8, and struck at a depth of 155 kilometers and 98km away from Tokyo.
It was felt more strongly in the center of the Japanese capital than in surrounding regions due to the complex way the seismic waves traveled underground along tectonic and fault lines, experts said.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said moderate aftershocks are possible for the next few days.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority said regional nuclear plants including the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant were undamaged. Three of its reactors went into meltdown after a magnitude 9 quake sparked a tsunami in March 2011, which destroyed vast swathes of Japan’s coastline and killed more than 18,000 people.
