Top nuke envoys for six-party talks to gather in Seoul this week
Top nuclear envoys for six-party talks to dismantle the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s nuclear program will gather in Seoul this week to discuss cooperation in Northeast Asian region, Seoul's foreign ministry said Monday.
Top delegates to the six-way dialogue from China, the United States, Russia and Japan will come here to take part in the multilateral forum on the Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative scheduled to be held in Seoul on Wednesday, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Attending the forum, the second after last year's first round, will be Chinese vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin, Russia's deputy Foreign Minister Igor Margulov, US special representative for DPRK policy Sung Kim and Kimihiro Ishikane, recently appointed director-general for the Japanese foreign ministry's Asian and Oceanian affairs bureau.
The South Korean foreign ministry asked the DPRK's counterpart to participate in the multilateral forum, but there has been no response delivered from Pyongyang until Monday.
The initiative is one of South Korean President Park Geun-hye's core foreign policies, which seek to build trust by first cooperating in the region on soft issues, like environment, disaster management and nuclear power safety, and expand cooperation into broader areas.
