Tornado lifts roofs, topples power poles in NZ

A tornado ripped through central New Plymouth in New Zealand's North Island early this morning, damaging houses and cutting power to some homes.

The Fire Service said the twister - described as short and sharp - hit the city at 4:15am, shattering windows, lifting roofs and uprooting trees, Radio New Zealand reported.

It struck the area bordered by State Highway 3, Carrington St, Rogan St and the beach.

There have been no reports of injuries but 15 commercial premises have been damaged and the roofs of three houses have been torn off.

The Fire Service said one house has been shifted off its foundations and some wires are down but overall "it's not too bad."

The tornado cut power to at least 300 homes in central and suburban New Plymouth.
