Tower closed

THE Eiffel Tower in Paris was closed for a second day because of a workers' strike. The nature of the dispute was unclear. An official said negotiations were expected to resume late yesterday between workers and management.

The tower did not open Wednesday. It normally stays open all year, but has occasionally been shut in the past because of strikes or high winds. More than 500 people work in the Eiffel Tower, which receives roughly 18,000 visitors each day. Designed by French architect Gustave Eiffel, the steel structure was inaugurated in 1889.
