Towering inferno in S. Korea

A MASSIVE fire broke out in a 38-floor apartment and office building in the southern port city of Busan in South Korea yesterday, news reports and fire officials said. No deaths were reported.

The fire started in the early morning in a high-rise in the city's beachside Haeundae district, fire official Kim Chang-sik said.

Flames quickly spread through the building's main stairwell, growing bigger as winds whipped up new blazes throughout the afternoon. The fire was finally put out seven hours later, Kim said.

Five helicopters, more than 80 fire trucks, and close to 600 firefighters battled the blaze, which left three residents and one firefighter slightly injured, he said.

Kim could not say how many people were evacuated. Some were rescued by helicopter from the building's roof.

Busan, South Korea's second-largest city, is about 400 kilometers southeast of the capital, Seoul.
