Train accident in India injures several people
OFFICIALS say a train accident in eastern India has injured several people.
Barun Bharadwaj, a senior railway official, said the accident occurred late yesterday near Malda, 300 kilometers northeast of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state.
He said that three coaches and the engine of the Gauhati-Bangalore express derailed and were thrown into the path of the oncoming Azimganj express.
Earlier this month at least 68 people were killed when a packed passenger train derailed in north India.
India's railroad network is one of the largest in the world and carries about 14 million passengers each day. Accidents are common, with most blamed on poor maintenance and human error.
