Trial of Tunisian former president to begin soon

TRIAL of Tunisian former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali by a military court in capital Tunis will soon begin, the official TAP news agency quoted spokesman of Ministry of Justice Kadhem Zine El Abidine as saying yesterday.

Ben Ali is currently involved in 88 affairs and has been indicted for 28 of them, said the spokesman.

Abidine also confirmed the arrest of Ben Ali's sister Najet Ben Ali on Thursday, who was hiding in a house in the coastal town of Sousse. She was heard by a magistrate yesterday and was released the same day.

The Tunisian authorities said yesterday they have seized two yachts belonging to former president's family that were docked at the Kantaoui marina near Sousse.

The former president, who received asylum in Saudi Arabia since his ouster, is accused of manslaughter, money laundering, traffic of archeological items and inciting people to take arms against each other.

Earlier in the week, the Lebanese newspaper Ennahar said that Ben Ali has appealed to a well-known Lebanese lawyer for his defense.
