Tunisian PM to quit political activities after transition

TUNISIAN Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi said yesterday he would not take part in any political activities after the transitional period, state TV reported.
The prime minister said he only temporarily keeps the post to bring order and strength back to Tunisia, adding he would stay away from political activities even if he was nominated for any position.
Meanwhile, Ghannouchi vowed to rid of all undemocratic laws under the rule of the fallen President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, and said the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections would be held in a free, fair and transparent way, reflecting the will of the Tunisian people.
He also pledged to compensate the families of those who died in the popular protests that throw away Ben Ali, saying the people sacrificed their lives for Tunisia.
The remarks came one day after the interim government, unveiled by the prime minister on Monday, convened its first meeting. Protests against the make-up of the new cabinet broke out everyday since it was established.
