Tunisian authorities arrest gang of thieves
SECURITY forces and the Tunisian army have arrested a gang of young thieves and robbers armed with sabers, knives, sticks and gas bombs, the Tunisian official press agency TAP reported yesterday.
Pictures of the gang members, stolen items and large amounts of cash, were shown by the Tunisian television yesterday.
The arrest comes amid a rising feeling of insecurity among Tunisians as reports of looting and arson carried out by armed gangs in night attacks, in several districts of the capital and in several Tunisian towns, have sowed fear in households.
The Tunisian television also reported that several rented cars loaded with guns were discovered by citizens who later called the army to seize them in the Ghazala district in Tunis.
According to the Tunisian television, former head of the presidential security General Mohammed Soriaty was also reported to have been arrested near the city of Ben Guerdene, in southern Tunisia, while trying to cross to Libya. He is believed to be behind the latest attacks against citizens.
Vigilante committees have been set up in the greater Tunis area and the Tunisian army has issued emergency numbers to be called in case of attack.
Due to the fast pace of events and the current power vacuum in the country, more and more Tunisians are taking their security into their own hands. Several major retail stores have been robbed and burnt in the capital and basic commodities, fresh vegetable and bread are becoming scarce.
