Typhoon hits Philippines
A SLOW-MOVING typhoon made landfall in the Philippines yesterday, drenching most of the north and triggering landslides that killed five children and a man digging for gold, officials said.
Typhoon Nanmadol buried a hillside house before dawn, killing a six-year-old girl and her five-year-old brother in San Fabian township, civil defense officials said.
The young siblings were buried in the mud and other debris for more than two hours before rescuers recovered their bodies.
The typhoon was moving north toward China's Taiwan at 7 kilometers per hour. Officials warned ships passing through the Bashi Channel south of the island to stay alert.
Taiwan's weather bureau issued a land warning for typhoon Nanmadol at 8:30pm yesterday, saying that the areas of Pingtung and Taitung should prepare for torrential downpour and strong winds. The island's emergency operation center required the authorities of the possibly affected areas to strengthen preventive evacuations.
Meanwhile, Fujian Province has ordered local ships to seek harbor as Nanmadol could create huge waves, the provincial flood control headquarters said yesterday.
